The census search allows access to all the census data which the Society has gained from various census projects prior to the advent of commercial online facilities. The system includes:

  • 1851 Census. Those later parts of the 1851 census for Northumberland and Co. Durham which were transcribed into databases rather than the earlier ones formatted as text documents
  • 1861 Census. Only 3 parts of South Shields.
  • 1871 Census. All of Northumberland (with Grateful thanks to John NIEURZYLA. This was a one man effort!)
  • 1891 Census. Complete census
  • The following may be used as criteria for a search

    Field Description
    Surname Surname of the individual

    • Exact Match – must exactly match the letters entered
    • Contains – must contain the letters entered
    • Starts with – must start with the letters entered
    • Sounds Like – sounds like the letters entered e.g. Smith / Smyth

County County where the census was recorded
Census Year Year that the Census took place
Estimated Year of Birth Estimated year of birth based on the age of the person at the time of the Census
+/- This applied to the Estimated year of birth and allows for a range to be searched. i.e. Year of birth plus or minus a number of years entered
